T Levels – developing the next generation of electricians

Offer an industry placement and support the new talent pipeline:

  • A great opportunity to test the water with a learner before committing to an apprenticeship
  • Help prepare young people for the industry
  • Pay it forward – give someone the chance that you were once given
  • Minimal financial outlay (you’re not obliged to pay wages)
  • Full support throughout the whole process from your local college or training provider

T Levels are the new technical vocational training route for 16-18 year olds. They are a Level 3 qualification taken over two years, where the learner spends 80% of their time at college and 20% in the workplace.

During the course they’ll learn core building services principles and, for those who aspire to be an electrician, follow an electrotechnical specialism route to learn specifically about electrical theory, principles and practises.

Once they complete their T Level, learners can progress onto an ‘accelerated apprenticeship’ already with skills and knowledge under their belt, making for a shorter apprenticeship training programme.

These young people need businesses like yours to offer them an ‘industry placement’!

We need electrical contractors to provide experience working on the job – known as ‘industry placements’ – across 45 days / 315 hours, so learners can gain on-site skills and knowledge to complete their T Level. These are well-prepared learners who really want to work in our industry.

The model could be via day release, block release, or mixed. You could also share a placement with another employer to make up the total number of hours required. Your local college will provide all the support needed to make it happen.
